The term was created by a group of leading US Massage Therapists and Educators at their Annual Conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1972. It was created as a result of their decision to include the Ancient Healing Arts in their training and scope of practice. From then on, other bodywork modalities such as Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Accupressure were taught and included in Myomassology Massage training, as well as full Swedish Massage techniques.

Myomassology’s multiple modality approach and therapeutic techniques allow the practitioner to meet the individual needs of each client and are trained to observe the ‘whole’ body carefully before designing a treatment plan for their clients.

During a treatment session each client will have an assessment done of their leg length and pelvic alignment. Many of us walk around with an apparent short leg which is often caused by tight muscles in the lower spine, not from one leg being shorter than the other. It is also often referred to as a leg length discrepancy, and occurs with Sciatica, Scoliosis, S.I. joint dysfunction, Piriformis Syndrome and back pain.

The body’s righting reflexes are situated in the eyes and inner ears. They sense minute changes on balance and can tell immediately when you are in danger of falling over. These reflexes assist you in maintaining an upright stance. They are involuntary – meaning they never switch off and are always on guard for you. Under normal circumstances, our pelvis should be level or parallel with the ground. During instances of short leg syndrome, the pelvis becomes tilted to the ground and the spine side-bends drastically to compensate, or you will fall over. This can create pain and dysfunction in many areas from knee pain to neck pain.

Myomassology incorporates a technique called Contraction Release Therapy which can release these tightened muscles and help normalise the spine and pelvic tilt, reducing pain and increasing daily function. Leg and hip balancing techniques are often incorporated into a treatment plan which are unique to the myomassology profession. During a treatment session of myomassology you may also receive Chinese Fire Cupping as well as the Contraction Release Therapy.
