Reflexology is an ancient form of healing that pre-dates Acupuncture in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ancient Chinese laws of science and philosophy laid great importance on balance and harmony between human beings and the environment. It is believed that the human body can be divided into 10 zones, 5 on each side of the body. These zones run the entire length of the body from feet to head. Tension and daily stress cause energy blockages, which can cause pain, over or under-activity of an organ and poor circulation. Any impairment of energy flow may affect the organ or function falling within this zone.
Each foot contains a detailed map of the human body with 5 zones on each foot. Each foot is slightly different as the human body is asymmetrical (liver on one side and spleen on the other). There are reflex pressure points on the foot which correspond to all body parts and by stimulating these points balance and homeostasis can be reached. The theory suggests that the reflexologists application of pressure to points on the feet emits a calming message through the peripheral nerves in the feet to the central nervous system. This in turn signals the body to adjust tension levels enhancing relaxation, returning organ systems to optimal function, shunts blood from the arms and legs to the core where all of our organs and digestive tract are. This allows the body to heal and restore balance to these areas.
Working on the feet brings a general sense of calm and relaxation to the client. Many clients fall asleep, drifting between the conscious state and unconscious. The treatment takes place lying on a massage bed with only the feet being exposed. Pillows and bolsters can be used to provide support where needed and a blanket is provided. If the client is unable to lie flat, it is possible to support them in a more upright position.
