Pregnancy massage can be started in the 2nd trimester, this is often when back pain becomes apparent as the rib cage and pelvis start to soften to allow for the growing fetus. By using special body positioning cushions, it is possible to lie face down right through pregnancy. There are also side lying options if it is not comfortable lying face down. The pressure used is gentler as the body is more sensitive to treatment and pressure during pregnancy.
There is a focus on pressure points for relief of certain aliments such as morning sickness. A head and face massage with pressure points is also included. The abdomen can also be massaged to aid in the stretching of this area, which can often get quite itchy. This is entirely up to the individual; it is very gentle hand over hand techniques and circling of the naval. Around the 6mth of pregnancy fluid retention is a common ailment and receiving regular massages can help alleviate the symptoms associated with it, such as swollen feet and ankles.
In the 3rd trimester low back pain and insomnia are common ailments which regular massage sessions can help reduce. The weight and size of the baby rapidly increases and causes changes in the centre of gravity for the pregnant mom. The pelvis tilts more to compensate for this causing lower back pain. By taking regular massages its possibly to reduce the tension in the supporting muscles, increase blood flow, reduce edema, assist with insomnia, and improve the overall wellness of mom and baby.
